Lotus Live Design Creative Studio

FAQ

Here you will find answers to the most common questions clients ask before and during a project. If you have a question that is not answered here, feel free to reach out directly or book a free consultation.

About Anna Trueman

  • I am Anna Trueman, a California College of the Arts alumna and working graphic and web designer since 1998. I am a Squarespace Circle Gold Partner, an invitation-only designation recognizing designers with demonstrated platform mastery and a consistent track record of exceptional client results. Pacific Sun Magazine named my studio Best Digital Design Services in Marin County in both 2017 and 2018.

My background extends well beyond design. I have been building and managing businesses since I was 18 years old, including a successful career as a licensed mortgage broker that I built from startup to a thriving practice before the 2008 financial crisis. That real-world business experience gave me a deep understanding of what small business owners actually need to succeed, which directly shapes how I approach every client project today.

  • Most designers are trained in craft. I am trained in craft and in business. My decades of experience building and managing businesses from the ground up means I understand your challenges, your goals, and your budget constraints from the inside. I do not just design a beautiful website. I think about how your website supports your operations, attracts your best clients, and produces a real return on investment.

This combination of design expertise, SEO strategy, marketing knowledge, and business management experience is what allows me to streamline my process, keep projects affordable, and deliver results that go beyond aesthetics. It is a genuinely unusual skill set in the design industry, and it is one of the primary reasons my clients consistently get strong results.

  • I work closely with each client personally and handle the majority of every project myself. This is intentional. It keeps communication clear, maintains design consistency, and eliminates the markup and overhead costs that agencies build into their pricing to cover large teams.

When specialized help is needed for specific technical tasks, I draw on a trusted network of expert colleagues. I am also a founding member of a large professional community of expert Squarespace designers, which gives me access to collective knowledge and support without passing agency-level costs on to you.

  • Due to my business model of pouring my energy into my clients rather than into self-promotion. I have grown Lotus Live Design Creative Studio almost entirely through client referrals and word of mouth since 2010, using no paid advertising. That is only possible when clients are genuinely happy with their results. It is the most meaningful endorsement I can think of, and it keeps my costs low in a way that directly benefits you.

My Approach

  • Rather than designing a website and adding other elements later, I create coherent digital ecosystems from the ground up. Your website design, branding, SEO, AI visibility, and business tools are integrated into one unified system as I design and build.

Nothing is retrofitted. Everything works together from day one. Because I specialize exclusively in Squarespace, my clients also benefit from ease of site management and lower project costs compared to platforms that require ongoing developer support. I also design and build sites in Shopify and have extensive experience in WordPress.

  • Live Design is my collaborative working method, and it is entirely optional. Rather than disappearing for weeks and returning with a finished design for you to react to, I build portions of your website together with you in real time, in person in Marin County or via Zoom or Google Meet.

During Live Design sessions, you are not a passive observer. You are partnering in decision making as your designs take shape, which keeps the project deeply aligned with your goals, your voice, and your vision.

Live Design is most commonly used during website design and development. For brand identity design, I typically work independently and present concepts for your review and feedback, which many clients find equally satisfying.

The collaborative nature of Live Design helps ensure that you are truly heard. The result is a website that genuinely reflects who you are and what you offer, and is not limited to solely the designer's interpretation of a brief submitted weeks earlier.

Most clients find this way of working together dynamic, inspiring, and far more satisfying than the traditional agency experience.

  • Since you are guiding decisions in real time, revision rounds are dramatically reduced. Fewer revisions means a faster timeline and a lower overall investment. Live Design projects are completed significantly faster than traditional agency workflows, and clients almost always spend less than they would with a fixed-fee agency model.

  • Live Design sessions double as tutorials. As we work together, I’m demonstrating how your site operates: how to update pages, post to your blog, run an email campaign, manage your booking system, and use the tools we are integrating. Sessions can be recorded so you have a personal library of tutorials to refer back to whenever you need them after launch.

You can complete your website project with real capability and confidence to manage many tasks in your own website without my assistance. Client empowerment is one of the most valuable long-term benefits of the Live Design method, translating into meaningful long-term cost savings for your business and reducing dependency on ongoing developer support.

  • No. Live Design sessions are optional. Some clients prefer a more hands-off experience and are happy to review and approve work between sessions rather than collaborating in real time. Either approach works well. Most clients who try Live Design find the process engaging, inspiring, and efficient, but the choice is entirely yours.

Integrated Design & SEO

  • SEO and website design are not separate disciplines. They are deeply interdependent. Every design decision, how pages are structured, how content is organized, how headings are nested, how images are named, how internal links flow, directly affects how search engines and AI tools evaluate and rank your site. When Squarespace web design and Squarespace SEO are handled by different providers who do not coordinate, the result is almost always a site where one undermines the other.

Working with someone who has advanced skill levels in both design and SEO means your site is designed for search from the very first decision, not retrofitted for it after launch. The architecture, the content structure, the visual hierarchy, and the technical foundation all serve the same goal: a website that is beautiful, discoverable, and effective.

  • It frequently causes problems that can be expensive to fix. I regularly work with clients who come to me after hiring a general SEO provider who lacked Squarespace-specific knowledge. Common issues include poorly structured content that conflicts with the platform's architecture, metadata applied incorrectly, design elements broken by SEO changes made without design awareness, and brand consistency damaged by content changes that did not account for the site's visual system.

Squarespace handles SEO settings, content structure, and technical performance in platform-specific ways that require genuine platform expertise to optimize correctly. A general SEO provider working without that knowledge can do more harm than good.

  • Yes. I work with existing Squarespace websites regularly, whether I built them or not. After an initial audit to assess the site's current structure, content quality, and technical health, I can develop a strategy to improve search visibility, correct existing issues, and build a stronger foundation for long-term growth.

My Monthly SEO for Squarespace packages are available for any existing Squarespace website. Book a free consultation to discuss where your site is now and what it would take to improve it.

  • On-page SEO is the foundational work built into your website during design and development. It includes keyword architecture, heading structure, metadata, schema markup, image optimization, internal linking, and local SEO signals. This work is included in every website design project I do at no extra charge. It gives your site a strong starting position in search from launch day.

Monthly SEO is the ongoing strategic work that builds on that foundation over time. Search algorithms change, competitors evolve, new content opportunities emerge, and AI search visibility requires continuous refinement. Monthly SEO keeps your site improving rather than stagnating, compounding your visibility and authority over months and years. You can learn more about my monthly SEO packages on the SEO Services page.

  • In more ways than most people realize. Page load speed is a direct ranking factor, and well-structured Squarespace design with optimized images and clean code loads faster. Clear visual hierarchy reinforces the heading structure that search engines use to understand page topics. Intuitive navigation reduces bounce rate, which is a behavioral signal that influences rankings. Mobile optimization is now a primary ranking factor, not a secondary consideration.

And a visually compelling, professionally designed site earns more time on page, more return visits, and more natural backlinks, all of which compound your SEO performance over time. Good design and strong SEO are not competing priorities. They reinforce each other at every level.

AI & Your Website

  • AI-powered search has fundamentally changed how people find businesses online. Platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity now answer user queries directly, surfacing recommendations from well-structured, credible websites rather than simply listing links. If your website is not built to be legible and authoritative to these systems, you are invisible to a growing portion of your potential audience.

This is not a future concern. It is happening now and it is accelerating. Businesses whose websites are structured for AI search visibility are gaining a significant advantage over competitors whose sites were built before AI search became a primary discovery channel.

  • AI search visibility requires specific structural and content decisions that go beyond traditional SEO. I build every website with these systems in mind from the start. This includes clear heading hierarchy, well-structured FAQ sections, schema markup that signals your business type, location, services, and credentials to AI systems, locally anchored content that helps AI tools surface you for geographic searches, and authoritative, specific content that AI systems can extract and cite with confidence.

The goal is for your website to be the source an AI tool references when someone asks for a recommendation in your field or location. That requires both technical structure and content quality working together.

  • Yes, selectively and strategically. Today, more than ever, it is important to have humans designing and building websites, because AI cannot replace human intuition and creativity.

I use AI tools to support research, keyword analysis, content refinement, and competitive analysis. AI assists my process but does not replace my judgment, my design decisions, or my understanding of your specific business and audience.

Every strategy, every design choice, and every piece of content that goes into your project reflects my professional expertise and creative direction, informed by nearly three decades of experience. AI is a tool in my hands, not a substitute for human design excellence.

  • No. AI website builders can produce generic templates quickly, but they cannot understand your specific audience, your competitive landscape, your brand voice, or the strategic decisions that make a website perform at high levels and connect with human audiences. AI cannot integrate SEO, AI search visibility, business tools, and brand identity into a coherent system. AI cannot discern the nuances of design artistry that comes from decades of professional practice as a website designer.

What AI tools have changed is the speed of certain tasks, not the value of genuine expertise. As AI-generated websites become more common, professionally designed websites that reflect authentic human design sense and strategic thinking will stand out more, not less.

  • The clearest test is to open Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews and search for the service you offer in your location. If your business is not mentioned or surfaced in the results, your site likely lacks the structural signals, schema markup, local anchoring, or content depth that AI systems use to identify and cite authoritative sources. A free consultation with me can include a quick assessment of your current AI search visibility and what it would take to improve it.

Process & Timeline

  • After your free consultation, if we decide to move forward, I will send you a link to my Discovery Questionnaire. Your answers help me refine the scope of your project. If you like, I can prepare a Project Proposal for you if you want. Project Proposals are not a required step, but can be helpful to larger companies with multiple stakeholders, and clients who want to do their project in phases.

After I review your answers in the Discovery Questionnaire, I will send you a Client Agreement to review and sign, along with your initial retainer invoice. Once both are received, I will set up your project management system where you can supply project assets. Some clients do not want to use my project management system and have their own. I am flexible and happy to use whatever system works best for us.

  • Most custom Squarespace website projects take 2 to 12 weeks from kickoff to launch, depending on the scope of the project and how quickly we are able to gather content, and the time limits we set for feedback and approvals. A clear timeline can be established at the start of your project. If yours is a large project, I can create a Project Proposal. Deadlines that we create work both ways: I commit to meeting agreed dates, and I ask that you provide materials and approvals in a timely manner as well.

  • You can provide text content, images, videos, and any other assets needed for your project. If you prefer, I am happy to help source or create content for you at my hourly rate. It is very common that I source images and do copywriting for clients.

All requests and instructions should be submitted in writing via email or through our agreed upon project management system so we can track scope and deliverables accurately. Using my project management system is not required, especially for smaller projects. I set up project management systems by request.

  • Because I bill hourly, you are not limited to a fixed number of revisions. My goal is creating a website that you love, and that is perfect for attracting your best audience. You have the right to change your mind, add pages, ask for more features, and adjust direction throughout the project. All change and revision requests are submitted in writing so we can track scope accurately and keep your project moving efficiently. The Live Design collaborative method also significantly reduces revision rounds. You can learn more about how that works in the My Approach FAQs.

  • Yes. While I am based in Marin County and serve clients throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, I work with clients across the US and internationally via Zoom and Google Meet.

Billing & Payments

  • I use a retainer-based hourly billing system, similar to how attorneys bill for their services. Rather than charging a flat project fee, I ask for a retainer up front, and all work is billed against that retainer as the project progresses. When the retainer balance runs low, a new retainer is requested before work continues.

I have found that this method of billing often saves clients 20% or more on overall project costs. Each project is fully customized for you, and better results are often obtained. This approach gives you full transparency into how your investment is being used, and means you only pay for work that has actually been done. Hourly rates are provided during your free consultation, where we can also discuss phased project options and budget planning tailored to your goals.

  • Flat rate pricing has to build in extra cost margins to handle inevitable changes in project scope, and add-on fees are very common in fixed-fee website packages. Most clients do not fully understand everything they need to build strong online visibility until the project is underway. Hourly retainer billing gives you maximum flexibility, control over your investment, and the ability to build the right components into your project from the start rather than paying for add-ons later. In my experience, clients who are billed on an hourly basis almost always spend less than they would on a comparable flat rate package.

  • Yes. The VIP Intensive Full Day and VIP Intensive Half Day packages are fixed price. The Branding Design Package is also a fixed cost. All other services are billed hourly against a retainer.

  • All invoices are payable upon receipt. Keeping invoices current keeps your project moving forward without interruption. If you ever experience financial hardship, I will do my best to work with you to make fair alternate arrangements. I want your project to succeed and am committed to finding solutions that work for both of us.

  • Our agreement is designed to be flexible and low-risk. There are no long-term commitments. Written notice of cancellation ends the agreement on the next monthly renewal date, and all outstanding invoices for work completed are due at that time

SEO & Visibility

  • Yes. On-page SEO, technical SEO basics, keyword architecture, metadata, schema markup, and AI search visibility structure are built into every website design project from the start at no extra charge. This is a core part of how I work, not an add-on.

  • SEO is a cumulative process. Meaningful results typically begin to appear within 4 to 6 months, and the most accurate performance evaluation should be done at 6 to 12 months. Search engine ranking algorithms change regularly, competition varies by industry and location, and no ethical SEO provider can guarantee specific ranking positions. What I can guarantee is that SEO work is done strategically, according to best practices for squarespace, and with your long-term visibility as the goal.

  • Yes. I can be hired to do SEO sporadically at my billable rate, or my monthly Squarespace SEO packages are available as a standalone subscription for any existing Squarespace website. Three Monthly SEO for Squarespace tiers are available: Essentials, Growth, and Premium, designed to match where your business is and where you want to go.

Design & Ownership

  • Everything created specifically for your project becomes yours once your project is paid in full. You own the graphics, visual elements, and text content created for your project. I will provide you with copies of all relevant files, which you should store carefully.

Proprietary custom code is handled differently. Custom CSS, JavaScript, and other code I write and integrate into your website remains my intellectual property. You are granted a non-exclusive license to use that code within your website for as long as our agreement is in place. This code may not be copied, extracted, resold, or transferred to another website or project. This is standard practice in the web development industry and protects the proprietary techniques I have developed over nearly three decades of professional practice.

Licensed third-party assets, pre-existing tools, and background intellectual property also remain mine.

  • Yes, and I design every website so that you can add new pages and content that match the established design. To protect the quality and integrity of the work over time, I ask that changes to the overall typography, color palette, navigation, header, footer, and layout styling be made in consultation with me. This ensures your website continues to reflect the same high quality design you invested in from the start.

  • Yes. Mobile optimization is included with every website I design and develop.

Platform

  • Squarespace is a fully managed, secure platform with no plugin maintenance or vulnerability patching required. WordPress is the most frequently hacked content management system in the world. For business owners, Squarespace means lower long-term costs, better security, and a site that stays working without ongoing developer dependency. As a Squarespace Circle Gold Partner, I bring platform-specific expertise that generalist agencies cannot match.

  • I am a Squarespace specialist, but I also use other website platforms such as Shopify, Wordpress, and Wix. For e-commerce projects where Squarespace Commerce is not the best fit, I work with Shopify. I have quite a lot of experience with other platforms moved my clients to Squarespace over years ago for the many benefits it offers, including cybersecurity, cost, and ease of use for clients after launch. I recommend Squarespace for the majority of business and professional service websites and have built complex websites that attract over 80,000 visitors per month, with custom integrations and advanced features for very large brands with international online presence.

  • Yes. One of the goals of every project is that you leave with the knowledge and capability to manage your own site. Live Design sessions include real-time training as we build, and I can record sessions so you have a personal tutorial library to refer back to after launch. The ease of use that Squarespace offers is a big benefit for clients who want to manage their sites.

Working Together

  • Yes, by request. Confidentiality is something I take seriously. Any information you share with me about your business, strategy, or clients is treated with complete discretion, whether or not a formal NDA is in place.

  • Yes, and many clients find that having a trusted designer who already knows their site and brand is one of the most valuable ongoing resources for their business.

I am happy to continue working with you on an ongoing hourly retainer basis for website maintenance, updates, SEO, marketing, and any other needs that arise. Written cancellation of the agreement ends the arrangement on the next monthly renewal date.

  • The first step is a free consultation, and there is no obligation. We will talk about your vision, your goals, your audience, and what success looks like for your business. I would love to learn about what you are building and explore how we might work together.
